Through the WEMADEIT project Western Engineering has been working with Grade 7/8 teachers from the Thames Valley District School Board to develop a hands-on approach to teaching science in the intermediate grades. Through talking with teachers & participating in workshops Western Engineering has learned that the only way to inspire students about engineering is to first inspire their teachers. Thus, the creation of WE MADE IT Projects!
These projects are currently geared toward Grade 7/8 teachers and include an interactive design & build project that are based on engineering principles, but link to science & literacy components within the Ontario Curriculum.
Teachers who have participated in these workshops have stated that it is like a light bulb has turned on for their students & in particular the girls in their classes are seeing science in a positive light. As part of the WE MADE IT project it is our hope that these workshops will eventually be accessible to teachers throughout the province & country. Western Engineering is excited to be part of the WE MADE IT project as together we inspire young women about engineering!
To date teachers have created wind turbines, putt-putt boars, trebuchets, mousetrap vehicles & many other exciting STEM projects. This training is built on teacher to teacher mentoring that focuses on creating an environment where students are able to learn about STEM in an engaging and impactful way. All the projects presented are cross-curricular with connections expanding beyond science into math, literacy, geography and social studies. If you or your school is interested in this type of training please email us about workshop dates in your area.
