ENG HEROES
Emad Khan
1. What is your current role and what does it entail?
I am currently a Project Manager at Hydro One. Our role essentially is to ensure the project at hand is completed on schedule and underbudget. This entails us to collaborate with various lines of businesses from engineering to construction, to real estate, to community relations etc. We ensure all lines of businesses work together to successfully complete the project at hand.
2. When did you know you wanted to be an engineer? What inspired you to pursue this field?
I think I became aware I wanted to be an engineer in high school, I enjoyed physics and math. I felt a sense of accomplishment when solving problems and I also enjoyed working with others to come to a solution. This carried with me throughout my undergrad at Western University as well as my professional career.
3. What has been your proudest accomplishment as an engineer so far?
I think the proudest accomplishment I have as an engineer so far is simply doing my job everyday. I work for a company that consistently provides the entire province power, and we hold ourselves to a high standard to ensure that the power we deliver is reliable. Understanding that we contribute to society in a very positive way give me a sense of pride.
4. How does your work as an engineer contribute to society?
Our work at Hydro One allows for everyone in Ontario to receive power. We are the largest transmission and distribution company in Ontario, and we transmit power directly from the generation stations to your local distribution companies. We take great pride in finding economical and creative solutions when expanding our grid or replacing retired equipment to ensure the cost of electricity remains low for the average Ontarian.
5. What advice would you give to young individuals from underrepresented groups who are pursuing a career in STEM?
I would advise the younger generation to find what you’re good at, and find out what you enjoy, and try to pursue a career in that field. For me, I enjoyed solving problems and talking to people, so I decided to go into a project management role for which I’m grateful to enjoy the work everyday. To get into the field of your choice, I’d recommend utilizing LinkedIn to connect with people in companies that interest you, you can learn a lot about the company simply by talking to employees there.
6. How did Hydro One’s New Grad Induction Program help you in your engineering pathway?
Hydro One’s New Grad program allowed me to try out different lines of businesses to see what I liked and where I fit in. At Hydro One, new grads are given the opportunity to go on two 6-month rotations after their first year in fields of their choice. I decided to do my first rotation in Protections and Controls in the field which taught me a lot about how protection relays work and how our system communicates as a whole. My second rotation was in structural engineering, and I understood that although it is fulfilling work, I did not enjoy it as much as project management. Nonetheless, it’s a great opportunity to be able to have the flexibility of gaining experience in different roles.
